Me on a train. ♩ ♪ ♫ ♬
This year, I finally found a very special new friend: Spotify. This is not an advertisement for Spotify but it has to be told in order to explain my story. ;) So, I’ve always been a huge music lover. Music of all kinds (except for our German “Volksmusik” and “Schlager” and a few genres like “Deutsch-Rap”, which clearly aren’t my thing, but I still like a few German artists, though!) has always fascinated me. My taste in music is extremely wide-spreaded and that’s how my playlists also look like. I have a very soft spot for movie and series scores, especially those from Hans Zimmer (my number one of soundtracks!) and Michael Giacchino (the man who gave → LOST a sound – my personal genius!), I also adore classical music (especially → Claude Debussy and → Camille Saint-Saëns) and I kind of got forever involved with all those Indie sounds that already won my heart during my youth (well, sounds weird to say that cause I actually don’t think I’m not young anymore, haha, but you know what I mean). I also listen to a few hardcore bands (which this year weren’t so much featured in my choice, but I love → August Burns Red and → Bring Me The Horizon!), as well as electronic music (the old → Daft Punk!!) and I also like a few hip hop pieces. Well… I think you get it.
The thing is: I had somehow let my love for music get lost in the last few years. I don’t exactly know why but one reason might also be that I love to listen to music pretty loudly and I felt like in a house with other people living there it wasn’t appropriate to do so. ;) So I still loved to listen to music, but on my iPhone. And I didn’t stop listening to music, I just forgot how much it gives me to always have something going on in the background or taking the time to actually listen – kind of like my own soundtrack (and hell yeah, I wish I had one!).
This year, I finally found my way back to music because of so many reasons and I’m so glad it happened. I’m also glad I found Spotify because that thing is insanely amazing – I found so many new artists thanks to their weekly mixes and suggestions and I’m so thankful for that cause I finally got back to music all day. And it definitely is something I need in order to function the way I’m supposed to. Music makes my life better. ♥
I want to share my favorites of 2017 with you, my personal playlist of my most-played and most-loved tracks of the year. And about some of them, I even got a few words to say. :)
Mac DeMarco
“My Old Man”
Mac DeMarco was one of my new discoveries of the year. I really like his style and actually wanted to visit one of his concerts but had no chance to go to Hamburg when he was there… Maybe next year!
Daughter
“Run”
This was actually a band I got to know through YouTube as a recommendation. And I really love this song. Fun Fact: a game I really love is “Life is Strange” and this year they released the prequel, “Life is Strange: Before the Storm”, and the band’s songs were featured a lot in this game (for example “Youth”, it’s an amazing song, too!). They really fit the game so well. And the games are awesome, even though I didn’t like episode 3 of “Before the Storm”…
This Is The Kit
“Bullet Proof”
This one’s perfect for a relaxed evening. I love the soft sound of the song. But I must say that this is the only one I like from This Is The Kit…
Hyukoh
“Gondry”
Oh, this is such a delicate song, and even though I don’t understand a single word of the Korean parts, it made me cry the first time I had it on my “weekly discovery” playlist. Isn’t this a beautiful song? ♥
Remy Zero
“Impossibility”
That’s the song that’s tattooed on my left arm. Forever a favorite. Forever on all of my playlists. ♥
Rufus Wainwright
“Poses”
Rufus Wainwright is one of my favorite artists cause his music is true art. Another favorite song this year was “The Art Teacher”.
Hippo Campus
“way it goes”
Definitely my favorite happy song of the year. It’s actually my #9 of the most-played songs of 2017 according to Spotify. :) Hippo Campus are also a new discovery for me and I really enjoy their sound.
Tennis
“In The Morning I’ll Be Better”
Another feel good song I had in my “discover weekly” playlist and that became a permanent part of my favorites of the year. :)
Incubus
“Paper Shoes”
Oh, I had a major flashback when Incubus released their new album (and it’s sadly so bad I felt like I could cry) so I had to dig out old songs. “Light Grenades” is one of the albums I could listen (and sing) to for the rest of my life and “Paper Shoes” is my favorite from the album. True love for this song.
Mild High Club
“Skiptracing”
My most-played song of the year. Don’t know how this could happen, haha! Well, probably because I really like it. :) And because Mild High Club are pretty cool.
Patrick Watson
“The Great Escape”
My second most-played song of the year. I guess that if you listen to it, you’ll get why. ♥
alt-J
“Every Other Freckle”
alt-J can’t be missing on any playlist! I’d say that “Every Other Freckle” is my favorite song but I also loooove “Breezeblocks”, so these are two songs you need to hear. :)
Coldplay
“Warning Sign”
That’s my favorite song from Coldplay (and the album “A Rush Of Blood To The Head” is one of my favorite albums ever!), so it has to be on the list (spoiler: will probably be also featured in the 2018 favorites list and all those coming afterwards, too). I miss the good old times when Coldplay were a great band, I’m not a fan of their new style…
Billy Talent
“Stand Up And Run”
I’m thankful I grew up at a time where music actually was pretty cool – one of my favorite bands from my younger days is Billy Talent and this song is an all-time favorite, even though it’s not their typical sound – but that’s something I really like. When bands try something a little (not completely) different. And Benjamin’s voice is still the same that makes the song Billy-Talent-ish enough. :)
My Chemical Romance
“The End.” & “Dead!”
You just can’t separate both songs, they have to played in a row. Well, My Chemical Romance were another flashback this year and I actually miss them a lot. Three more favorites on my list should be “Helena (So Long & Goodnight)”, “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and “Welcome To The Black Parade”!
Rex Orange County
“Best Friend”
I’ve got a lot from Rex Orange County on my playlist (and even more in my saved songs, haha!) and I love every single song so much but this is probably my favorite. :) Another match made by Spotify (seriously, I’m so thankful for all the new artists in my life!).
Remy Zero
“Someday at Christmas”
My favorite Christmas song of all times. “Someday at Christmas” is a classic but, of course, I love the version of my favorite band the most. :)
Gorillaz
“Dracula”
I’m a huge fan of the Gorillaz, since “Clint Eastwood”. I have to confess that I don’t really like the new album but enjoy a few songs, even though it’s not that typical Gorillaz style anymore. When they started to work with other hip hop artists, it kind of became a bit boring to me, but there are some diamonds, which you can also find in my list. And “Dracula” has always been one of my favorite songs for summer – it kind of feels like a super hot day outside to me. :)
Queens of the Stone Age
“I Never Came”
A little QOTSA has to be on that list. And that’s my favorite song. You should see me singing in the car, haha!
HONNE
“It Ain’t Wrong Loving You”
One of my favorite new discoveries. I really like that kind of music. You also have to listen to “Warm On A Cold Night”, if you like this one!
Nashville | Hayden Panettiere
“Nothing In This World Will Ever Break My Heart Again”
Okay, so here goes a fact about me: I’m a true Nashie! I fell in love with the series about two years ago and really love the songs from the show. But this one was somehow a life-saver after my break-up, it kind of made me stronger.
Doves
“Ambition”
I can’t even say how much I love this song. It’s so, so beautiful and I love to listen to it when it’s completely dark and I can put on my headphones or turn on the volume so I can actually feel the song. Seriously, if you don’t know it, you have to listen to it! ♥ Plus: the Doves are SO good, I love almost every song they ever made. But this one’s an absolute gem.
Danke für deinen Musikbeitrag, ich werde definitiv mal reingucken!
Du kannst auch gerne deine liebsten Songs des Jahres teilen – ich bin immer offen für Neues! ;)
